Thomas P. Essex
MSW, LICSW, SUDP
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a broad range of experience that includes working with people experiencing intellectual disabilities, substance use disorders, all aspects of mental health needs, family systems challenges, and trauma. I have supervised psychiatric facilities, worked in emergency rooms, and within the criminal justice system. My experience has prepared me to work successfully with individuals, families, and the systems in place designed to support people seeking assistance for challenges associated with substance use, anxiety, loss of home, loss of loved ones, depression, trauma, and involvement in the criminal justice system.
I believe in the strength and resiliency of every individual. In my experience, people possess the most accurate understanding of what is happening in their world, what they like and what they want to be different. Life is difficult and change can be difficult as well. My job is to show up for you with an open and curious mind in order to hear what is important to you. I can provide a safe space to talk free of judgement or expectation. Together we can discuss what you would like to accomplish, identify goals for counseling, and develop the path forward.
Therapy can be lot of things. It can involve addressing unshakable memories, loneliness, grief, uncomfortable family dynamics, substance use, anxiety, mental wellness, managing stress, or working toward a change you want in your life. You will decide the direction, I can provide the support and guidance to safely navigate the emotions big or small that arise along the way. Working together we can be flexible to move in the direction that will best support you. In session you will have a safe space to talk about what is important to you and dive as deeply as you feel comfortable. Between sessions you will have a chance to reflect on our conversations, gather insight to inform decision making and bolster confidence.
